IGF-1 is a polypeptide compound produced from HGH (Human Growth Hormone). The vast majority of strength increasing, muscle increasing, and anti-aging effects of HGH (Human Growth Hormone) are directly attributable to it's conversion by the liver and other tissues into Insulin-like Growth Factors (IGF-1). IGF-1 has been shown to increase the transport of amino acids into muscle cells throughout the body, thus regenerating these tissues after exercise. According to European researchers, IGF-1 initiates the transport of nucleic acids into the nucleus of the cell where DNA resides. It provides the raw material needed to repair damage to the DNA and initiates cell division.

Deer Antler Velvet: In Asia, the notion of promoting wellness, rather than curing illness, has prevailed successfully for thousands of years. One ancient Chinese remedy that is especially used to prevent colds and flu is deer antler velvet. Legend (and my own personal experience) has it that it is also an aphrodisiac. New Zealand has begun human trials, which are necessary to verify effects in people. Specifically, research has examined velvet's ability to boost immunity, prevent anemia, normalize blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, reduce side effects from cancer treatments, assist recovery after surgery, improve memory, serve as an anti-inflammatory agent, and enhance athletic performance and recovery.

In 1998, researchers at New Zealand's AgResearch Invermay (a state-owned agricultural research facility) and the University of Otago completed phase I of a clinical trial on New Zealand deer antler velvet's ability to improve athletic performance. The 10-week double-blind study was conducted under the medical supervision of sports physician Dr. David Gerrard at the university. Although the results of the first test were inconclusive, they were encouraged enough to conduct a phase II of trials. The second studies results which were just released in March of 2001 built on the first trial's scientifically rigorous testing procedure using a larger sample population receiving a daily dosage of velvet from 850-1,200 mg [IGF-1+ Deer Antler Velvet Spray = approximately 300 mg Deer Antler Velvet per spray (about 93 sprays per bottle)]. Researchers examined velvet's effect on building endurance and delaying fatigue, as well as its influence on the repair of damaged muscle tissue. "In this study, athletes who took dietary New Zealand deer antler velvet for two weeks showed significantly reduced elevation of creatine kinase levels in their bloodstream and recovered from muscle soreness 24 hours earlier than subjects on placebo,". Creatine kinase, a substance found in the bloodstream, was used as an indicator of muscle-tissue damage in the study.

Currently, human double-blind, controlled studies are ongoing at AgResearch and the University of Otago, exploring scientific foundations for the possible use of velvet in supporting immunity, joints and tissue, blood pressure and blood health. A study at Eastern Tennessee State University is underway to confirm and expand upon the human clinical trials done in New Zealand.

"Fifteen years of scientific and ethical research stand behind New Zealand deer antler velvet, proving what Oriental medicine has known for 2,000 years - that velvet is good for you," said M.J. Loza, chief executive of NZGIB.

More Information:

Veterinarians and animal-welfare organizations tightly control the antler removal process in New Zealand. Antler removal is done under the strictest regulatory processes. Once a year, the male deer are brought into specially designed facilities for antler removal. The process is quick and painless, using local anesthetic, and within minutes of antler removal, the deer are back with their herds grazing.

NEW ZEALAND DEER ANTLER VELVET BACKGROUND INFORMATION

• Deer antler is deciduous, growing every year

• "Deer velvet" refers to the antler's stage of growth (ie before it calcifies into hard horn) and not to the antler's soft external coating

• Deer velvet is removed while the deer is under local anaesthetic, by trained farmers or veterinarians, accredited to a national program approved by the Animal Welfare Advisory Council

• Traditionally, velvet is used in oriental medicine as a nourishing tonic especially before winter — to prevent illness

• Other traditional uses are for children's growth, for blood loss, for weakness and for chronic joint pain

• Deer velvet antler is now proving to be one of the most beneficial products in natural medicine. Oriental physicians have regarded it as an essential health, energy and sexual tonic for the past 2000 years. The West is now benefiting from deer velvet antler and its range of natural health properties.

Deer Velvet Antler Provides Nutritional Support For Joint Structure and Function

The first health care claim of deer velvet antler to be substantiated by scientific evidence, in compliance with US Food and Drug Administration dietary supplement regulations, was announced by the North American Elk Breeders Association (NAEBA) recently. Executive Director Ben Coplan said the determination, is a significant breakthrough for the nation's 1,400 breeders of farm-raised elk.

According to Coplan, the Nutrinfo report states there is a reasonable basis to claim that velvet antler helps relieve the symptoms of arthritis. However, a disease claim may not be used for a dietary supplement in the US; therefore, the acceptable statement for product labels and advertisements of a dietary supplement would be "provides nutritional support for joint structure and function."

Many studies have shown most of the carbohydrate in antler is proteoglycan, which is a combination of protein and carbohydrate. The carbohydrate portion is primarily glycosaminoglycan, of which chondroitin sulfate is by far the predominant constituent. One study cited by the Nutrinfo report evaluated the clinical efficacy of chondroitin sulfate in knee osteoarthritis. Treatment with 3 X 400 mg doses per day for 90 days provided significant relief from symptoms as reported by patients. "We intend to research and substantiate other health benefit claims for velvet antler," Coplan said.

"We want to carefully research the potential benefits of velvet antler supplements for supporting the immune system, anti-aging, muscle strength and endurance, and sexual vitality."

Deer Velvet Boost to Strength and Recovery

The New Zealand Game Industry Board and AgResearch are working hard to prove scientifically - that New Zealand deer velvet may have a positive effect on athletic performance.

Although requiring further examination, the latest human clinical trials (conducted by the Otago University Human Performance Center on behalf of NZGIB and AgResearch) do indicate a possible link between New Zealand deer velvet and improved athletic performance on two fronts; improved strength and endurance in response to training, and improved recovery from muscle tissue damage associated with exercise.

In the first study, scientists at Otago University Human Performance Center compared the development of muscle strength and endurance in groups of males taking different forms of New Zealand deer velvet to a control group taking a placebo. In the study, 51 male athletes undertook a 12 week period of supervised training during which strength and endurance were monitored. The group taking New Zealand deer velvet antler showed greater improvements in isokinetic strength and muscular endurance as a result of training than the control group.

The second study was designed to determine what role New Zealand deer velvet antler has in athletic performance by affecting recovery from muscle injury. A substance found in the bloodstream called creatine kinase, was used as an indicator of muscle tissue damage. more.

The thirty athletes in the trial ran downhill on a treadmill to induce muscle tissue damage in the muscles at the front of their thighs. Muscle biopsies and blood samples were then taken.

Those athletes who had been on a course of New Zealand deer velvet for two weeks previously showed significantly reduced elevation of creatine kinase levels in their bloodstream, possibly indicating less muscle damage.

A trend also emerged in which athletes taking powdered New Zealand deer velvet reported a recovery from muscle soreness 24 hours earlier than the subjects receiving a placebo. The benefit of this is that they could return to training more quickly. While not yet being a complete picture, the statistically significant results bode well for further research.

The above statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
