Suggested Usage: As a dietary supplement, take 1 or 2 Vcaps 2 to 3 times daily on an empty stomach or as directed by a health-care professional. Vitamin B6 is crucial to converting Tryptophan into serotonin. To ensure you are getting enough, take a twice daily multi-vitamin like BioSynergy Complete Daily Multi and/or Neuro Clear.
L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid important in human nutrition for the synthesis of serotonin and melatonin, hormones regulating sleep, positive mood, and immune function. As an essential amino acid, it is not synthesized by the body and must be obtained from the diet. Some experts estimate that only 1% of the Tryptophan you get from food reaches the brain and low levels can adversely affect sleep, weight, and mood. Supplementing your diet with L-Tryptophan can mean a more restful night’s sleep, a brighter mood, and a host of other benefits.
Serotonin Support:
You can take either L-Tryptophan or 5-HTP to support your serotonin level.
Try:
Take L-Tryptophan, 500 mg once in the afternoon and once before bed. If needed after one week, you can take 1000 mg twice daily. Take these on an empty stomach (one hour before or two hours after meals).
Or:
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), 50 mg twice a day, once in the afternoon and once before bed. Add an additional 50 mg in the afternoon and at bedtime every three days until you get to a maximum dose of 150 mg once in the afternoon and once before bed.
5-HTP or L-Tryptophan, which is likely to help you more?
There is no clear winner because everyone's biochemistry is different. Some people report getting better sleep and other benefits when taking L-Tryptophan and for others, 5-HTP works best. Experience is the only answer. Experiment and let your own experience reveal which one works best for you.
Note: Use either 5-HTP or L-Tryptophan, not both. If you are taking an SSRI or antidepressant, check with your health-care provider before taking 5-HTP or L-Tryptophan.
