Antioxidants in Coffee Beans

More Than Just a Great Taste

You may not know that coffee even contains antioxidants, but it could well be the most significant antioxidant source in your diet – especially if you struggle with fruits and vegetables.

Antioxidants Coffee BeansIf you’re actively looking for coffee beans to provide all-round health benefits, what exactly should you be looking for?

  • Organic Beans: Organic beans come from sustainable sources, so they’re better for the environment as well as your body. They also tend to be grown without the use of chemicals – like herbicides and pesticides – and there’s a better chance of receiving a pure product. While not necessarily more rich in antioxidants, there’s no doubt that they’re better for your body and that’s what counts.
  • Dark Roast: Studies have shown that when the beans are heated, the bean’s natural antioxidants are lost. However, the roasting process actually then creates a series of stronger antioxidants that are more beneficial than those that occur naturally. This is due to the Maillard reaction and means you’re better off with the extremely strong Torrefacto roasted beans, which are used to make espressos.(1)
  • Limiting Your Intake: If you’re busy, it can be tempting to drink a lot of coffee – we’ve all been there. But you’ll receive the most benefits by limiting yourself to one or two cups of coffee a day. Any more than that and the negative effects of coffee drinking could outweigh the positives.
  • Grind Your Own Beans: Although it’s easier to buy pre-ground beans, freshly grinding your own beans right before brewing will keep them fresh and ensure the highest levels of antioxidants. Be especially wary of pre-packaged coffee grounds from big coffee companies as there’s no way to guarantee the antioxidant levels.

What’s So Good About Antioxidants?

A lot of things. Firstly, they occur naturally in many of the foods we eat, especially fruits and vegetables, and help you to keep feeling young and healthy.

They work to slow the oxidation caused by free radicals. These are atoms that have become unstable after losing one of their two electrons. They need a pair to function properly, so they do whatever they can to find a new one – including stealing them from other atoms. This, in turn, creates a new free radical, and the process repeats. These reactions are linked to cell damage and degeneration, and have been linked to a large number of diseases and illnesses.

Increasing the level of antioxidants in our body slows this degeneration process, helping you to feel better and look younger. A great excuse to drink quality coffee every day!
