Fighting Free Radicals with Antioxidant Supplements

This is normal. Your body needs some free radicals as they play an important part in certain bodily processes, but the oxidation they cause has been linked to cell damage and degeneration. So when you have too many free radicals the effects can include increased signs of aging and, potentially, the destruction of DNA threads.

But What Makes a Free Radical?

If they’re to function properly, all atoms need a pair of electrons. However, sometimes atoms will lose an electron. When this happens and they no longer have a pair, they turn into free radicals.

Free radicals are highly reactive and unstable, potentially making dramatic changes to your body. These free radicals need to gain an electron, forming a pair, to become fully functioning atoms again. Unfortunately, they can’t make this electron appear out of nowhere, so it often means stealing an electron from another atom. This creates another free radical, starting a chain reaction that can keep going indefinitely.

Fortunately, antioxidants can help to counter the damage caused by free radicals. By slowing down the process of oxidation, you could inhibit degeneration and the overall process of aging, leaving you feeling fitter and looking younger.

So Which Supplements Should I Take?

It’s difficult to know which supplements might be right for you, as there are plenty of options on the market right now.

If you take the right combination of antioxidants, you’ll not only fight the effects of free radicals, you’ll also encourage your body to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This is a chemical form of energy that helps to repair damaged DNA and create new DNA and genes. This accelerates the healing process, meaning you’ll not only age slower, your body will also repair itself faster too.
