Bodybuilding and Muscle Groups

Bodybuilding is the art of developing the musculature of the body. When we think of a bodybuilder, we often picture a very muscular individual performing a biceps curl. It’s tempting to think of bodybuilding in terms of sculpting single muscles or small groups of muscles, but to achieve significant muscle gains most serious bodybuilders must develop a rigorous program of compound exercises targeting large muscle groups.

The human body consists of approximately 642 muscles, most existing in pairs on opposite sides of the body. For bodybuilding purposes, these can be categorized into major groups: the muscles of the chest, triceps, shoulders, abdominals, and back.

Compound exercises are exercises that work more than one joint and more than one major muscle group. For example, the barbell squat works the legs, back and abdominals including the muscles of the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, and – when performed properly – the stabilizing muscles of the abdominal core. Contrasted with leg extensions – an isolation exercise targeting the quadriceps alone – the barbell squat is significantly more efficient in building overall lower body strength and muscle size.

For the upper body, the bench press – which works the muscles of the chest, triceps, shoulders, and back – is an efficient exercise for targeting several large muscle groups at the same time. By contrast, the biceps curl – however macho you may feel curling a heavy weight – targets only the biceps and some of the smaller muscles of the arm.

An effective weight training routine made up of compound exercises can save significant time in the gym and result in greater muscle gains over a shorter span of time. In addition to the barbell squat and bench press, other popular compound exercises include the deadlift – which is very effective in building the glutes but also engages all the major muscle groups of the lower body – the barbell row, and the overhead press.

Bodybuilding and Muscle Groups: Supplements

In addition to an efficient weight training routine made up of compound exercises, those just starting out in bodybuilding or looking to build lean mass quickly often turn to nutritional supplements. Not all supplements are effective, however, and some may even be harmful. If you are considering augmenting your healthy lifestyle with nutritional supplements, be sure to purchase only the best.
