L-Theanine Dosage

What Can L-Theanine Do For Me?

There’s a reason people turn to tea when they want to feel calm: each cup comes with a dose of l-theanine, a non-protein amino acid that encourages calmness, relaxation, and mental clarity.

L-theanine was first discovered by Japanese researchers in 1949 and since then it’s been studied and taken extensively, thanks to the many positive side-effects and no known negative ones. Common benefits you’ll find from taking l-theanine include:

  • L-Theanine DosageMental and physical relaxation without any drowsiness, making it a safe, natural alternative to prescription drugs. You’ll feel calm and relaxed, but also capable of carrying on as normal.
  • Improved memory and attention. If you have to keep your brain working hard for long periods of time, or suffer from memory loss, l-theanine could really help.
  • Decreased stress. When you start to feel stressed, you may already put the kettle on and start making a cup of tea. The l-theanine in your tea helps to calm you down, but there are times when you may want the benefits without the drawbacks of tea – like caffeine intake when you want to go to sleep.
  • Heightened immunity. L-theanine works on specific sets of immune cell types to help your immune system. Another reason for drinking more tea when you feel unwell!

The Best L-Theanine Supplements

With these kinds of benefits linked to l-theanine, it’s easy to see why tea is the second most consumed drink in the world. When it’s combined with the caffeine and cysteine present in many varieties of tea, l-theanine becomes even more powerful due to a stacking effect. This boosts the positive effects, particularly in terms of mental processes and cognitive ability.

However, if you don’t like tea or don’t want any of the other side-effects associated with tea drinking, there are plenty of alternatives for increasing your l-theanine intake.

The best of these is Suntheanine, which is a pure form of l-theanine that is made by the same Japanese company who first synthesized the supplement. It is a trademarked product made from only the highest quality raw ingredients.

What Dosage Should I Take?

cognitive abilitiesThat really depends on how your body reacts to l-theanine and the reasons behind taking the supplement. It’s always a good idea to start with a very small amount and build up your intake as necessary.

We sell our Suntheanine supplement as 100mg or 200mg capsules and recommend taking these only 1-3 times a day. If you’re looking for mental clarity effects, 100mg would be a good place to start, especially if you will be consuming caffeine as well. Studies have shown that this is enough to notice improved cognitive abilities.

If you’re taking l-theanine for stress and relaxation reasons, studies have shown that 200mg is a more effective dosage. However, it might still be a good idea to start with the lower dose.

Human toxicity trials haven’t been conducted using l-theanine, but the United States Food and Drug Administration recommends consuming no more than 1200mg per day, so even accounting for tea consumption, you’ll remain within the recommended safe limits.

L-theanine is regarded as a very safe product, so as long as you take it sensibly you should have no problems.
