Get complete Acetyl-L-Carnitine information below:
Acetyl-l-carnitine is a stabilized form of the amino acid metabolite L-Carnitine and is utilized in the same manner in the body. Acetyl-l-carnitine plays an important role in the transfer and utilization of long-chain fatty acids, which are used in the production of energy.
Biosint™ pharmaceutical grade Acetyl-L-Carnitine is manufactured in Italy by Sigma Tau HealthSciences which is the premier international clinical research organization for ALC and its uses.
NOTE: Beware of internet brands that claim “pharmaceutical grade acetyl-l-carnitine” but don’t include name of manufacturer. There are only two manufacturers in the world who make pharmaceutical grade acetyl-l-carnitine. They are Sigma Tau Health Sciences (Biosint™) and Lonza (L-Carnipure™). Non-brand ALC is made in China and much less expensive. Biosint™ is a trademark of Sigma-tau HealthSciences.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine, ALC, Acetylcarnitine, ALCAR
Acetyl-L-Carnitine is a molecule that occurs naturally in the brain, liver, and kidney. Natural levels of Acetyl-L-Carnitine diminish as we age. The acetyl group that is part of acetyl-L-carnitine contributes to the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is required for mental function. Acetyl-l-carnitine is a stabilized form of the amino acid metabolite L-Carnitine and is utilized in the same manner in the body. Acetyl-l-carnitine plays an important role in the transfer and utilization of long-chain fatty acids, which are used in the production of energy.
Common uses for supplemental Acetyl-l-carnitine:
The acetyl group that is part of acetyl-L-carnitine contributes to the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is required for mental function.
Acetyl-L-carnitine can cause nausea or stomach upset, vomiting, and restlessness. It may also cause the urine, breath and sweat to smell “fishy”.
There has not been enough research done to advocate for or against the use of acetyl-L-carnitine during pregnancy or while breast-feeding.
Some people who have a history of seizures have reported an increase in the number of seizures while using L-carnitine by mouth or IV (intravenously).
Do not combine Acenocoumarol (Sintrom) or Warfarin (Coumadin) with Acetyl-L-carnitine. Acetyl-L-carnitine increases the effectiveness of these drugs.
Acetyl-L-carnitine Dosage: Take 2-3 capsules daily. Consider taking this product with BioSynergy R-Alpha Lipoic Acid and CoQ10.
Also available in a Combination Pack with R-Alpha Lipoic Acid 100 mg (120 vegetarian caps) BioEndurance contains Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and CoQ10 in one capsule

Carnitine Supplement Helps Sperm Swim
By David Douglas
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Taking carnitine supplements seems to improve sperm mobility in men with poorly active sperm, a problem known as asthenozoospermia, Italian researchers report.
However, for carnitine to work, tiny structures within the cell called mitochondria must function properly. Mitochondria are important because they provide the energy needed for sperm to move their tail and “swim.”
Senior investigator Dr. Carlo Foresta told Reuters Health that “it is well known that in some asthenozoospermic subjects an improvement of sperm (motion occurs) after carnitine administration…However in other asthenozoospermic patients this effect is not present.”
To investigate further, Foresta of the University of Padua and colleagues studied 30 asthenozoospermic men divided into two groups depending on whether they had normal or abnormal mitochondria function. The researchers’ findings appear in the medical journal Fertility & Sterility.
In patients with normal mitochondria function, movement rose from 29.3 percent before treatment to 41.1 percent after 3 months of carnitine. However, in those with abnormal function, movement held steady at about 24 percent.
Thus, Foresta concluded that carnitine treatment is useful “in ameliorating sperm motility only when optimal…mitochondrial function … is conserved.”

Q. What is the difference between L-Carnitine and Acetyl-L-Carnitine?
A. L-Carnitine and Acetyl-L-Carnitine have overlapping health benefits especially with regard to producing energy in the mitochondria in organs and muscle tissue throughout the body.
The main difference is that L-Carnitine is found in higher concentrations in muscle tissue including the heart so the emphasis is on producing physical energy whereas Acetyl-L-Carnitine is found in concentrations in the brain so the emphasis is on providing healthy brain function.
Q. Can both forms of Carnitines be taken at the same time?
A. It is safe to take both forms of Carnitines at the same time using the suggested daily usage of either one split between the two.
Suggested usage: Acetyl-l-carnitine suggested dosage is 500 mg two to three times daily. Consider taking this product in combination with BioSynergy R-Alpha Lipoic Acid and CoQ10.
