Ubiquinol Benefits

What is Ubiquinol?

Ubiquinol is an important, naturally occurring enzyme that’s already present throughout our bodies. In fact, it’s contained in every one of our cells. So why would you want to take it as a supplement?

While you’re young, your body is able to synthesize adequate amounts of ubiquinol, which is electron-rich and high in antioxidants. However, as we age our bodies can’t produce enough, making this a particularly important supplement once you’re over the age of 30.

But what are the associated benefits, and is it really worth topping up your levels?

Why Should I Be Taking It?

Secondary benefits include increased oral health, renal health, and male fertility. However, there are a few main benefits associated with ubiquinol, including:

  • Energy Production – ubiquinol synthesizes mitochondrial energy and produces ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is the primary energy intermediate in all living organisms. This means that ubiquinol can provide huge boosts to energy levels, making it a great supplement for those suffering from general lethargy and endurance athletes alike.
  • Cardiovascular Health – strong links have been made between ubiquinol levels and a healthy heart. A study by Dr. Peter Langsjoen demonstrated that ubiquinol helped heart failure patients to pump blood over twice as effectively as when they were given ubiquinone – the unsynthesized form of ubiquinol – amongst other beneficial effects.
  • Anti-aging effects – being rich in electrons, ubiquinol is great at fighting free radicals. This helps to reduce signs of aging and improve your immune system.

All of these benefits combined make ubiquinol an excellent choice of supplement, particularly if you’re over 30 or at risk from any of these potential problems. What is without doubt is that ubiquinol is one of the first-choice antioxidants for tackling high levels of free radicals.

But What Are Free Radicals?

It’s a good question. The term gets thrown around a lot, but it’s important to know what it actually means.

All atoms need a pair of electrons in order to properly function. When they lose an electron, they become free radicals, which are highly reactive and unstable. These free radicals need to gain an electron to become properly functioning atoms again, but this means grabbing an electron from another atom, causing yet another free radical to form. This chain can continue indefinitely, causing damage to your body.

Having free radicals in your body is normal, but problems arise when the levels become excessive. When this happens, the rate of aging will increase and threads of DNA could even be destroyed.

So How Does Ubiquinol Help?

The electron-rich ubiquinol works in two ways:

  1. By supplying excess electrons to free radicals, turning them back into functioning atoms without them stealing electrons from nearby electrons; and,
  2. By breaking down the structure of free radical molecules, effectively neutralizing them and preventing further detrimental effects.

As we get older, we need ubiquinol to break down these free radicals more than ever before. But, in turn, our bodies are less equipped to produce ubiquinol, making regular supplements a healthy and smart choice for your future health.
